The spring “seasonal shift” is a time when energy dramatically changes, especially daylight! There is an effect on our bodies and immune system! The light gives us more energy, our emotions are lifted. However, as the ground thaws and things begin to grow, there is more pollen in the air which can overwhelm our immune system. My family notoriously, would have upper respiratory “issues” this time of year. Kristen got asthma, Mike had pneumonia, I would get bronchitis and go on the zpak.
Thankfully, we figured out a holistic approach that has been working well the past few years, by supporting the inside we mostly keep above the wellness line. Here are a few recipes that I have been effective through the seasonal shift from winter to spring!
A mantra “nature supporting nature” is a best first step to supporting any wellness regimen. Essential oils are like food, they are powerful when used regularly to support the body and help make it strong and responsive.

How to use Essential Oils
There are three ways to use essential oils; aromatically, topically, internally.
Aromatically releasing essential oils into the air. First, open the bottle and breath. Second, place a couple of drops in to your palm, rub your hands together and breath in. Alternately, place a few drops in your diffuser and enjoy.
Topically applying oils directly or indirectly to the skin.
Internally means to ingest the vitality oils as directed by labels.
Key Spring Essential Oils
- Raven is a blend that contains eucalyptus radiata, peppermint, lemon, wintergreen + ravinstara. It is perfect for all things spring.
- Eucalyptus Radiata is rejuvenating+ soothing +purifying. It cleanses the air and when applied to skin supports respiratory wellness.
- Lemon is packed with antioxidants and are both purifying and detoxifying. These properties are great for seasonal changes because they support the immune system while helping the body detoxify.
- Lavender is soothing + calming. When used internally, it eases tension.
- Peppermint is loaded with cooling agents and relieves body tension while opening up airways.
- Idaho Blue Spruce is a grounding oil, loaded with antioxidants and calming, perfect for clearing the mind while sleeping.
Best Essential Oil Chest Roller Blend
Breathing heavy and raspy can be initial signals that our body’s can use a little love. At the onset of these kinds of clues, I reach for oils that are rejuvenating, purifying, cleansing and soothing. My “go to” blend is called Raven. Raven has all three components, rejuvenating, cleansing and soothing. Eucalyptus, peppermint and lemon. Raven creates a cooling sensation when applied topically to the chest and throat.
Best Essential Oils Chest Roller Blend
Recipe for a 10mL bottle
- 10 mL Roller bottle
- 10 drops Raven Essential Oil Blend
- 10 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
- 10 drops Idaho Blue Spruce Essential Oil
- Fill with carrier oil (olive oil, fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil)
Directions for use: apply directly to chest, behind ears and to feet.
The carrier oil helps the body absorb the essential oil more easily. Essential oils are fat soluble, just like fat soluble vitamins. Carrier oils are a delivery system, any organic oil will work. I enjoy fractionated coconut oil because there is no odor. Extra virgin olive oil is readily available in any kitchen and also advisable to use as carrier oil. Use what you have and upgrade the next time around.
Note: if making for a child, 6-11, dilute this blend reduce to 5 drops per ingredient.
Diffuser Blends for Seasonal changes
Scent is a great way to positively impact our brain chemisty. Fragrance triggers our brain to release different hormones in our body. Calm grounding chemistry has positive life affirming affects on our system. Diffusing pure essential oils assures that communication between our brain/body is clear. Here are our two favorite diffusing recipes.
Seasonal Day Relief Blend
- 2-4 drops Lemon Essential Oil
- 2-4 drops Lavender Essential Oil
- 2-4 drops Peppermint Essential oil
I love this nighttime blend. The secret ingredient is the blue spruce which supports the respiratory system and is very grounding and calming to our emotions. Let this be your alchemist blend.
Nighttime Seasonal Relief Blend
- 2-4 drops Raven Essential Oil Blend
- 2 drops Lavender Essential Oil
- 2-4 drops Idaho Blue Spruce Essential Oil
Other Natural Remedies for Seasonal Changes
Taking a tub to soak is one of the Simple Luxuries. In the event I cannot take the time to soak my entire body, I will soak my feet and realize very powerful detoxifying + rejuvenating + relaxing effects from a 10-20 minute foot soak. I am constantly reminded never to underestimate the benefits of simple, but significant, rituals.
Invigorating Salt Bath recipe
- 1 cup Epsom Salt
- 2 -4 drops Raven
- 2-4 drops Lavender
Pro tip: buy a canister, like this, and store your pre-made epsom salts.
